Carbon Footprinting
Scope 3 Emissions

The emergence of binding carbon legislation and customer emission disclosure requests has created new product and corporate level carbon footprinting requirements.  Carbon footprinting and CO2 equivalent (CO2e) calculations are difficult challenges that require significant effort.  To accurately assess the footprint of a corporation or a given product, a greenhouse gas emission accounting system must be able to incorporate the totality of emissions within your supply chain.

Inherently, a carbon footprint calculation requires an organization to gather data on the emissions / energy consumption of its suppliers.  Large procurement initiatives ranging from Walmart’s Supplier Sustainability Assessment to the United State’s General Procurement Office’s proposed Scope 3 emission disclosure requirements are driving carbon footprinting.  Calculating your carbon footprint presents a host of data gathering and reporting challenges that go beyond logistics.

Carbon Footprinting Solution

GEMS unique strength in product level data management makes it the premiere carbon footprinting tool.  GEMS utilizes your Bill of Materials (BoM), facility carbon emission data, and logistics information to attribute CO2e values to your product.  GEMS ability to interface and integrate with all major ERP/MRP/PLM and Product Specification systems enables GEMS to mirror your BoM and allocate imbedded greenhouse gas emissions to your product’s components.  This embedded emissions data can then be rolled-up to the finished product level for an accurate, auditable product level carbon footprint.

GEMS also provides users the ability to assess suppliers’ scope 3 greenhouse gas emission data thru configurable reports.  Scope 3 data can be combined with internal scope 1 and 2 level greenhouse gas emission data to establish a corporate carbon footprint.  By attributing emission data at the component level, then rolling-up the embedded carbon of procured subcomponents and raw materials, users can assess the variable metrics of both the organization’s and product’s carbon footprint.  The roll-up functionality allows carbon management to be integrated into decision making criteria when dealing with multi-sourced components and assessing the performance of site specific carbon reduction efforts.
